SEO Myths

SEO Consultants have different opinions and also work on different techniques that may be entirely different from each other. This has created so many myths about SEO. Some of the myths of SEO and their reality are described here:

Myth 1: A website will obtain large targeted traffic as quickly as it goes online.

Truth: This myth is created because of a combination of outdated information, a non practical, over confident site owner or a lack of understanding of the web. During old days there were not so many websites, so getting a top position was an easy task. In this competitive age, traffic to your site will not come automatically; it must be advertised just like a business.

Myth 2:

· Website requires the submission of every page to the search engines.

· Regular or monthly submissions results better search engine rankings.

· Website requires keeping on submitting to search engines otherwise they will forget about the site.

· If a website submits to thousands of search engines its traffic levels will increase

Truth: some of these myths have a bit of truth to them but in this time, search engine submission is not necessary at all. These myths are generated by companies that are providing submission services, as it financially benefits them.

It doesn’t harm to submit to the leading search engines but indexing can be achieved simply by getting links to a site if the page on which link is on, is known to search engine. The people generally use a few search engines, so there is no requirement of submitting on a large quantity of search engines.

Myth 3: search engine optimization is just about Meta tags.

Truth: Meta tags used to be very significant for rankings if search engines are not much complex. Meta tags like the description and title tags are important as most of the search engines display them on their results. The tags like the keyword tag are obsolete.

Myth 4: The belief that there are two types of SEO, black hat and white hat (the good versus evil).

Truth: Any effort to change the search engines results and getting more traffic is against most of the search engines guidelines. While there are strategies that may get you banned and others that may or may not widely known about (yet), all of them are trying to influence the results and therefore are against the rules. SEO is neither black nor white, but many shades of grey. Just try to know what you are doing and more importantly the associated risks.
